SYMBOLISM: Is it in Your Writing Tool Box?
Symbols. Do you have high school language arts flashbacks of your teacher saying ‘this means that.’ Symbolism is everywhere! It’s nuanced. It has many shades and levels. ‘This’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘that.’
Symbols are much more complex, which means it’s a versatile and nuanced literary device that can add depth and complexity to your story.
Symbols and their layered meanings act as a diving board into a deep pool of emotional, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and intellectual dynamics that you decide how to mold and manipulate. It’s just one more tool for your writing toolbox.
