Eating Symbolism

#Oh, the drama of the family meal! People eating and drinking together is tasty with yummy symbolism. Why is that, you ask? In ancient times, sharing one’s meal symbolized hospitality and goodwill. Certain foods, drink, or days were associated with religious and social rituals. If one was breaking bread with someone, it indicated friendship, truce, partnership, or an alliance.

The human race hasn’t changed all that much. We still enjoy eating with those we like and avoid eating with those we don’t. Eating and/or fasting rituals are found in most religions. And I can’t think of a holiday that doesn’t center around food and eating. Or fasting and then eating. Sharing food is an act of agreement, fellowship, and harmony. Writing a meal or eating scene is challenging, but can reveal much about the plot, characters, relationships, family dynamics, setting, or culture.

Find More Time to Write

Do you work a full-time job? if you’re a writer with a full-time job it can be a challenge to find or make more time to write. Not only do we need to find time to write a novel, writers need to build a platform, network with other writers, and get on social media. It can feel overwhelming.

100% honesty here! It is very difficult to write after work. I’m tired and there is household tasks and errands to run. So when do I write?

This episode is how I learned to work with my brain’s creative rhythms, and how and when to use the time I do have more effectively. I called it cold brain ( no creativity), warm brain ( some creativity ) and hot brain ( creativity is on fire.) This helped me not only get more things done, it allowed me to make and find more time to write novels. Work with your creative brain’s rhythms to squeeze every ounce of productivity from it.

The Power of Blood Symbolism

Blood symbolism is vast and wide. Blood is a powerful and often confusing symbol. From the divine to the violent, our fascination with blood infuses our collective consciousness.

An entire book could be devoted to the symbolism of blood. And perhaps already has. The reason behind the power of blood is obvious.

Blood is life and death, a physical indicator of our existence. And yet, behind this crimson liquid life force, man has imbued blood with great spiritual, divine, and emotional power.

This episode looks at the 21 ways blood can be used symbolically in a novel. Have you used blood symbolically in a novel? Let me know and drop a comment. I definitely used blood symbolism in my gothic, historical fiction The Impaler’s Wife.

Author Book Marketing Tips | Think Click Bait

Check out my new book! Check out my new blog!  Those kinds of posts on Instagram, Twitter, and FaceBook don’t work! Why? Because they are boring and don’t provide any hint about why someone needs to check out or click the link.

Writing a teaser and/or promo lines ( or copy ) is a challenge. It’s a marketing skill. And we’re authors, not marketers or advertisers. Authors need to learn some marketing skills and learn how to improve the book, blog, and promo teasers we post on social media. Think clickbait! The phrase “check it out” is not intriguing, interesting,  or attention-grabbing. In fact, it’s kind of demanding. And yet I see it all the time. Every single day.

In this episode, I share my 3 book marketing peeves. I also share 3 easy ways to improve your book promo game.
